Make This DIY Wooden Planter in Just 30 Minutes

We created this really quick DIY planter the other day to use with a plant in our living room, but I think it would be perfect for outdoors too when we all start filling our planters with colorful annuals in a few weeks. Actually, considering how quickly this one came together, I might have to persuade Chris to help me make a few more for the deck too.

This planter took almost no time to throw together, like maybe 30 minutes, tops but I just love the look of it. It’s got a nice textural element to it that’s a little modern but that also works really well with some of the other rustic farmhousey type of stuff like I like to have in our home.

Chris is all about making videos these days, so of course he had to make a little video for this project too for you to enjoy. 🙂

If you like our easy DIY videos, you can see them all over on our youtube page anytime if you missed one. They also play over on the sidebar if you’re on our site on your desktop computer or laptop. We’re getting quite a little video collection now and it’s so fun to see it all coming together!

For the planter we cut a bunch of pieces of wood that were all the same size, along with a piece for the base, stacked them together like a little log cabin and then used the nail gun to secure everything together.

We used 1×2 pine and cut our pieces to about 12″ long, but the construction of this is so simple that you can easily make this any size you like just by cutting your pieces a little longer or shorter.

We stained it with good ol’ Early American, but it would definitely look great with a lighter stain or maybe a bit of a grey wash if you like the look of the “raw wood” trend. Since our floors are already that color, the darker stain contrasts nicely.

It’s so nice to be able to whip something up yourself when you can’t find something that you like in stores or when everything you find that you like is super expensive! 🙂 If you have a lot of scrap wood laying around like we do, this planter can end up being virtually free!

Here’s the finished planter in place in little corner of our living room!

We just used it to hold this faux fiddle leaf fig plant, which I’ve really been enjoying, but you could definitely put a regular outdoor plant pot in there with no problem at all. The construction of this planter was really simple, but that thing is sturdy!
